The Best Supplements for Menopause

Cross posted from our friends at Binto.

Menopause is a normal process that every single woman goes through at some point. But the fact that it's "normal" doesn't make dealing with the accompanying hot flashes, fatigue, mood changes, night sweats, and other symptoms any easier.

The good news: Some supplements for menopause can help. Binto has all the supplements you need to make going through menopause easier.

Why Does Menopause Happen?

Our bodies were designed to eventually stop being able to get pregnant and have children at a certain age. We're born with a finite number of eggs, stored in ovaries, which also make the hormones estrogen and progesterone. These hormones are in charge of the menstruation and ovulation process.

Eventually estrogen and progesterone shift and drop, which kicks off the menopause process. When the ovaries no longer release eggs every month in preparation for pregnancy, menstruation stops. This usually occurs between ages 40-55, although it can occur as early as the late 30s (known as premature menopause).

Symptoms of Menopause

1. Irregular Periods: The first sign that you're approaching menopause is that your menstrual cycles start becoming less frequent and/or irregular. Many women will also experience hot flashes—a sudden wave of heat in the head, neck, and chest. These are caused by a decrease in estrogen levels. Hot flashes can also carry over into night sweats, which can then cause insomnia (fun!).

2. Mood Changes: Another symptom is changes in mood, which is less talked about. Because of the dramatic shift in our sex hormones during menopause, our mood, and our mental health, can be impacted. This can look and feel like depression, anxiety, irritability, and/or sadness.

3. Physical changes: Again, blame it on your hormones! Most women will experience some weight gain, especially around their waist. You might also notice more brittle nails, thinner hair, or dry, itchy skin. Your bone density also takes a beating, which is why it's crucial to keep an eye on your bone health at this age.

4. Libido: You might find that your sex drive starts to dwindle during this time. As your hormones shift, there's less blood flow to the vagina, which can make it drier down there while dampening your desire for sex. (A water-based lubricant can help!) But not everyone experiences this—and some women find sex to be even more fulfilling during this time of their life.

Best Supplements for Menopause

Currently, there are very few remedies or treatments for women in menopause. Fortunately, certain OTC supplements, such as Binto's 50+ multivitamin, contain ingredients that have been shown to help women manage this transition, naturally. Here are some of our favorites:

Vitamin A: A type of retinoid, this fat-soluble vitamin plays a vital role in a number of processes in the body, including maintaining healthy vision, protecting your immune system, and supporting bone health. Besides supplements, you can also get vitamin A from orange and yellow fruits and veggies, animal products, and fortified foods.

B Vitamins: As you age, your body loses some of its ability to absorb vitamin B12, which can result in fatigue, weakness, constipation, mood changes, and more. Another B vitamin, B6, also helps prevent depression by helping to produce serotonin (the feel-good hormone) in your brain.

Vitamin D3: This vitamin is crucial for bone health as your estrogen levels fall. Find it in fatty fish like salmon and tuna, fish oils, egg yolk, butter, and liver. Your skin also produces it when exposed to sunlight (but always wear sunscreen!).

Find out more about this super vitamin — and why it's different from vitamin D or D2. P.S. Binto’s vitamin packs only contain the highest quality D3 — with no preservatives, gluten, sugar, or any other additives.

Probiotics and Prebiotics: These help support a healthy gut, where your hormones are metabolized. Because of the powerful gut-brain connection, these can also help boost and stabilize your mental health. Read more about why we love our Binto probiotics here.

Herbal Supplements: Certain plant extracts have been shown to help relieve menopause symptoms such as hot flashes. To name a few: cocoa seed extract, blueberry fruit extract, black cohosh, and curcumin. All these powerful supplements are packed into our Women's 50+ Multivitamin. Read more about it here.
